Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;
As Christians, we are in a spiritual fight for our eternal souls, and the souls of others. But we do not have to fight this battle alone. God has given us everything we need to fight against Satan and all the methods he uses to try and bring about our downfall. We are given several defensive weapons for our protection, as well as offensive weapons for conquest against dark powers and principalities, and against spiritual wickedness in high places.
The helmet of salvation guards our minds and helps us to discern spiritual truth so that we avoid giving in to deceptive teaching and false doctrines. The girdle of truth helps us combat the lies of the devil by surrounding ourselves with the truth of God’s Word. The breastplate of righteousness is the righteousness of Christ which we receive by faith when we accept Him as our personal Savior. It protects our hearts and innermost being from Satan’s assaults, much like earthly armor protects the heart and internal organs of warriors. Foot protection – the preparation of the gospel of peace – helps us overcome obstacles placed in our path by the enemy, so that we may boldly advance and share the gospel with others. The Shield of Faith keeps seeds of doubt from growing into a forest of fear and worry. It protects us against the fiery darts of the wicked; the various temptations, lusts, and evil thoughts that detract from our relationship with our Heavenly Father.
The Sword of the Spirit – the Word of God – is our greatest offensive weapon against Satan. Like Jesus, when tempted of the devil, we have the truth of God’s Word to combat the father of lies. Satan knows what God’s Word says, but he will deliberately use it out of context, or twist its meaning, hoping that we will fall for his deceptions. When we hear scripture, rather than accepting that it is used as God intended, we should take the time to study and rightly divide His Word, so that we may stand strong in the full truth, instead of falling for falsehoods and misleading half-truths.
In addition to the armor available to us, we have another effective weapon against Satan’s strategies, and that is prayer. By allowing the Holy Spirit to intercede for us, and making our requests and petitions known to God, we can be assured that He hears and will answer. As His Word tells us, the prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective (James 5:16), and the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and His ears are attentive to their prayers (1 Peter 3:12).
So, begin your day with a conversation with God, including praise, worship, and any requests you may have. And every morning, just as you dress for your day in the physical world, be sure to put on the whole armor of God, and trust in the power granted to us through the Holy Spirit. Of ourselves, we do not have the power to combat evil, but by trusting in the power of the Holy Spirit, and with the knowledge that we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us, we can stand against all strategies of attack that Satan brings against us.
Grace and blessings on your path,
